LED Screens for Facades and Outdoor Advertising

Outdoor facade and DOOH LED screen guidance: brightness for direct sun, IP65 protection, wind load, viewing distance from the road and city permits.

Brightness is the first decision

An outdoor screen fights the sun for most of the day. Permanent outdoor displays commonly run 5,000 to 8,000 cd/m2, and a south or west facing wall in strong daylight needs the top of that range. Brightness is not free: it raises power draw and heat, and many cities cap night-time luminance, so a screen with automatic dimming that can be set to a permitted night level is easier to approve than one designed around a single fixed output.

Wind load, structure and the building

A large facade screen is a sail. The steel structure and its anchors have to be engineered for the local design wind speed rather than estimated on site. The calculation depends on the screen area, its height above ground, whether the wall behind it is open or enclosed, the gap between screen and wall, and whether the site is coastal or in a valley where wind accelerates. Cabinets with mesh backs or deliberate gaps let air through and reduce the load, but they also reduce contrast because light passes behind the LEDs, so that trade-off belongs in the engineering discussion rather than being left to the panel choice.

Permits, protection and service

Most cities regulate outdoor screens by luminance, hours of operation, distance from residential windows and, in many cases, the amount of moving content allowed after dark. Applications tend to move faster when the drawings show the screen area, the brightness range with a dimming schedule, and the structural certification together, because those are the three questions a planning officer asks first. For protection, permanent outdoor cabinets are normally IP65 or better, with drainage arranged so water cannot pool in the cabinet or the frame, and coastal sites call for extra attention to fixings and coatings. Service access is the other long-term decision: front-service cabinets let a technician work from a cradle or from inside the building without pulling panels from the street side, while rear-service designs need permanent walkway space behind the screen. Power draw of roughly 500 to 800 W/m2 at peak white, with a realistic average well below that, drives the supply, generator and UPS plan.

Send the screen size, the nearest and furthest viewing distance, whether it is indoor or outdoor, whether it will be filmed and the destination country, and we will return a written quotation with a cabinet layout, a brightness recommendation and structural notes.
