A festival screen is transport equipment as much as a display. It is built in a warehouse, trucked a long distance, flown on a truss, rained on, and struck again within a few hours of the headline set. The specification that matters most is therefore not the finest pixel pitch available but the balance between image quality, cabinet weight, weather protection, rigging load and the number of crew hours needed for load-in and load-out. A wall that assembles quickly and packs into standard flight cases will be used more, and repaired less, than a marginally sharper one that takes twice as long to build. For main stage use, outdoor rental cabinets in P3.91 or P4.81 with 500 x 500 mm panels are the working default. Cabinet maths decides the finished size: a screen is always a whole number of cabinets, so a 10 m x 5 m wall is a grid of 20 x 10 panels with no custom filler strips, while an 11 m target would leave a 500 mm gap that has to be closed with a masked column or by changing the target width. Settle that grid early, because it also fixes the number of power and data links on site.
Rental cabinets of 500 x 500 mm typically weigh 7 to 9 kg each, so a 10 m x 5 m wall is roughly 50 panels and several hundred kilograms of screen before truss, motors and rigging hardware are counted. At festivals the answer is usually ground support towers with ballast rather than a flown grid, and the structure has to be engineered for the wind speed the site expects rather than assumed from a previous event. Ladder bars and quick locks speed up the build, but the real time saver is a repeatable layout: the same cabinet order, the same power chain and the same data path every day.
| Position | Typical pitch | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Main stage, crowd 4 to 8 m away | P3.91 to P4.81 | Common rental size, a good balance of weight and definition |
| Side IMAG screen, 8 to 15 m away | P4.81 to P6.67 | Fewer cabinets for the same area, lighter structure |
| Distant delay screen | P6.67 to P10 | Brightness matters more than pitch at this distance |
| VIP or hospitality tent | P2.6 to P3.91 | Nearest viewers may be only 2 to 3 m from the screen |
Outdoor rental screens draw roughly 500 to 800 W/m2 at peak white, so the generator and distro plan has to be agreed with the screen size, not after it. Data normally comes from a sending card with redundant feeds and a backup playback source, and the control position needs either a clear line of sight or a network link. Three answers change the cabinet choice more than the pitch does: the rigging points available, the wind speed the site is designed for, and whether the wall will be filmed. Screen price varies with specification, so those details are what a written quotation is built on.
Send the screen size, the nearest and furthest viewing distance, whether the display is indoor or outdoor, whether the wall will be filmed and the destination country, and we will return a written quotation with a cabinet layout and a recommended pitch.
