Outdoor LED Display Buying Guide: Brightness, IP Rating and Structure

What to specify for a permanent outdoor LED screen: brightness for daylight, IP65 protection, wind load, power and the difference between fixed and rental cabinets.

Outdoor is a different specification, not a bigger indoor screen

An outdoor screen sees rain, dust, sun, temperature swings and wind load. Four specifications separate a screen that lasts ten years from one that fails in the first summer: brightness, ingress protection, thermal design and the steel structure it hangs on.

Brightness: match the worst daylight, not the average

Indoor screens are comfortable at 600–1,200 cd/m². Outdoors the screen competes with the sun, so 5,000 cd/m² is the practical floor and 8,000–10,000 cd/m² is standard for facades that face the sun for part of the day. Brightness is also an operating cost: the higher the peak, the more power and heat the cabinet produces.

Ask for an automatic brightness sensor. A screen that runs at full power at midnight is wasting electricity and shortening LED life.

Ingress protection: IP65 front and rear

IP65 means dust-tight and protected against water jets. For a permanent outdoor installation insist on IP65 on both faces, and ask what the rear cabinet sealing looks like — that is where water enters in practice. For coastal or high-humidity sites, ask for conformal coating on the driver boards.

Thermal design and power

LED efficiency falls as temperature rises. Outdoor cabinets are usually fan-cooled with an IP-rated airflow path, and the screen needs a realistic power budget: allow 500–800 W/m² peak for a high-brightness outdoor screen, with average consumption typically 30–40% of that. Confirm the supply your building can deliver before the cabinet layout is fixed.

Structure and wind load

The display is only part of the project. The steel frame, the fixings and the wall or foundation must be engineered for local wind load, and in many markets the installation needs a stamped structural drawing. Ask your supplier for cabinet weight per square metre and a mounting-point drawing early — the structural engineer needs them, not the sales team.
